How long does radioactive fallout last for and still cancerous?

Im asking. How long is Radioactive fallout cancerous for? Say if you wore one of them big Biohazard suits. and a bit of Fallout landed on you what was radioactive. would you get cancer? Or would you be normal because your in a biohazard suit
