I'm a bit confused. Do we have to buy an Oyster Card and a travel card? Need for 2 non-consec. days?

We are a family of 6 traveling for 3 days in London but one day we will be outside the city so need transportation for 2 non-consecutive days. Will be going to many sites. Thank you for advice.
