In the Book the Scarlet Letter?

if i recall correctly, Chillingworth is Hester's husband. i think he asked her to keep that identity a secret while he interviewed her in her prison cell. He's the embodiment of deliberate suffering and evil. As long as his identity is kept secret, the suffering Hester and Dimmsdale experiences flourishes.
